Mirrormask
"Mirrormask" is out on DVD this week and is well worth a look. The story is a murky version of the ususal lost-in-a-magic-land-and-have-to-find-the-way-home a la "Alice in Wonderland"/"Wizard of Oz"/"Phantom Tollbooth" but the visuals by the Henson company are truly stunning and fabulously imaginative. These are great images. Why don't critics pay more attention to the art direction of movies? It is such a significant part of the overall tone and aesthetics of the film. I note that the Society of Illustrators in NY currently has some lovely paintings on display from the recent robot animated film. These deserve wider recognition.
