It Must Be the Motorcycles

What else could explain the stunning box office for the mediocre "Ghost Rider" and "Wild Hogs?"

Could this mean we have sequels in store?

Stunning? C'mon. There's always been a disconnect between public taste and what critics consider quality entertainment.

What I smile at is box office induced review inflation. Your critique certainly graded Hogs less than mediocre. Maybe if box office receipts climb past $100 million, you'll call it "better than average."

A C grade seems to me to be the definition of mediocre, don't you think?

And yes, Mencken was right about no one ever going broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. But it bothers me that people don't realize that they have the right to expect better -- or even that there is better to expect.
